Volunteer!

There are many ways to get involved. It is as simple as coming in for a visit. Or, if you are not in the area, write us a letter to be read around the dinner table. For example, we have one friend who lives miles away who sends us Bingo prizes and a wonderful letter every month! Other ideas and opportunities:

Do you have a green thumb?
We are looking for a volunteer to come in once a week and water our plants and keep them healthy. Ideally, we can involve the residents in this pleasant task. Please contact Leanne for more information at 846-4456.

Just come in and say hello!
We love visitors at Island Commons. One of our favorite things is to hear how things are going, what you've been up to and to talk about Island goings-on. If you have 15 minutes (more time is welcome, too!), come by and chat with us. NOTE: There is a real need for this between 4:00 and 6:00pm when the single CRMA staff person is getting dinner ready. Having visitors at this time really makes everyone happy!

Be a Fill-in or a Helper
Many of our events and activities have a committed person who comes in each week to run a specific program.  However, even the most committed of our volunteers have appointments or catch the flu.  We need a few people who would be available to fill in when needed. Some favorites are Bingo and driving the ladies. Also, activities such as crafts need an extra person to help things along. If you don't want to run an activity on your own, but want to help out, being a fill-in or a helper might be the way to go.

Go for a ride!
One of the things that make us the happiest, is to go for a ride around the island to take in the sights. Residents can go in your car, or the big green van (after a simple training).

Island Buddies
Be a Buddy.  Being a Buddy is just like it sounds – Volunteercome in and make a friend, or renew old friendships.  There are plenty of simple things you can do that will make a big difference in someone’s day.  Read the newspaper, help with writing a letter, assist in playing a game, eat lunch together, or just take five minutes to stop in for a quick chat.  In return, you can hear about island history and know that your presence brightened someone’s day.  Qualities needed for this position include patience and commitment to being a Buddy.

Provide Bingo Prizes
We have BINGO every Wednesday afternoon at Island Commons and we look forward to it all week!  One thing that would make it even better are token prizes for our winners.  What we are looking for are small, fun items such as special chocolates, note cards, guest size soaps, chapstick, silk flowers, etc.  Get creative, but please keep in mind these should be fun, small items that can fit into a grab bag.

Bring Your Expertise
Are you an artist? Like to bake cookies? Play an instrument? Or maybe you simply love to play dominos or Shoots and Ladders?  Whatever your talent is, we encourage you to share it with us.  We can set up a cookie bake, a mini concert, an art hour, board game time, or some other event that fits what you have to offer.

Send us your ideas
Do you have an idea for an activity at the Island Commons, but don’t have the time to put into it yourself?  Please give us a call and share your brainstorms.  Maybe we can find someone who does have time and would be interested in implementing it.
